How to make team t-shirts

Robotics Team T-Shirt Information

    1. Why make a T-shirt?

When you head to your first competition you will see all the other teams arrive wearing team T-shirts.  It helps build the team identity an helps the judges remember you. It is helpful to take a team picture wearing their T-shirts ahead of time to include in the team’s competition binders and team information sheet you might have for competitions.

The best reason to make a shirt is that it provides a great team building experience and helps teams learn how to make decisions.  How will you decide on a design? Is it by voting, combining, or other method? It makes a great CORE values activity. Start early so you have it ready in time!  Our suggested vendor has a week to two week turn around, unless they are busy!

    1. How do we come up with a design?

What is your team name?  Also, think about the challenge this year.  Do you want to include the theme in your shirt design?

There are many design sites, but our suggested vendor, Big Frog, accepts the CustomInk application.  The program allows people to collaborate on a design.  One can design and send the link to others so they can add to the design.  If you go with Big Frog then do not complete the order through CustomInk, only use it for design purposes. You can check with Big Frog for other options they accept.  The printing process will not allow you to use white ink in the design, so tell your team ahead of time.

**The only requirement for the shirts is to have the School logo and “Meadowbrook Middle School” text.  Teams usually place this on the back.

Here is a link to copy and paste into your browser to get the Meadowbrook Logo.

    1. Design tips to keep in mind:

The printing process uses laser printing. It will not print white letters or images.  Printing dark black or dark blue on an already dark shirt will mute the colors a bit. Go and see their sample shirts for color ideas.

    1.  What do we do once we have a design?

Gather the T-shirt sizes of all your team members, coaches, parents and siblings that want a shirt. Remember the shirts shrink and tend to run small.  There are also women’s v-neck shirts available.

Once each team has finalized an image, someone from the team should go into Big Frog (address below) to complete the order with one of their designers to make sure colors and images are good.

Send the design via email ahead of time and let them know you are coming.  Take a look at the available T-shirt colors and see if they match what your team was picturing.  You may have to adjust your design based on available colors and what looks best. Take pictures of the color examples to show your team if needed.

Let them know you are with Meadowbrook Robotics if you want a discount.

    1.  How many shirts do we get?

Meadowbrook Robotics will pay up to 12$ reimbursement each for 2 coaches shirts and the shirts for as many team members as your team has.  You may want to purchase extra shirts for parents or siblings who might want to attend the competitions with you.  They will have to pay for these extra shirts themselves, but the price is reasonable. Make sure you include it with the Meadowbrook team order to get the discount.

There are also women’s v-neck designs available for purchase that are a little more expensive but are still covered by Meadowbrook if for a coach or team member.

Make sure to check the sizes before ordering!
